Wales suffer setback as star sidelined for months.

Wales and Ospreys have suffered a significant injury blow after scrum-half Kieran Hardy was ruled out for months and told he will require knee surgery. The 30-year-old was forced off during the first half of Ospreys’ 38-31 victory over the Dragons on Friday night at Rodney Parade. Hardy was sent for scans after the match, and Ospreys transition coach Richard Kelly confirmed on Tuesday that the Wales international faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“He’s had a serious injury and is going to need surgery,” Kelly said. “We won’t know the exact timeline [of recovery], but we are probably talking months over weeks. We’ll have to wait until post-operation and talk to the surgeon.”

Major setback for Tandy

The news is a major setback for Wales head coach Steve Tandy, as Hardy had established himself as an important member of the international squad ahead of the autumn campaign. The 32-cap scrum-half had been expected to feature in Wales’ November Tests after serving as Tomos Williams‘ understudy throughout the 2026 Six Nations.

Hardy was included in the matchday squad for all five championship fixtures and came off the bench in three of them. He had been firmly in contention for the autumn series.

Wales begin their November campaign against Japan in Cardiff on Saturday, November 7, but Hardy now looks certain to miss the international window. His recovery timeline also raises serious doubts over his availability for next year’s Six Nations.

Strong form for Ospreys

Hardy had been in impressive form for the Ospreys, building on a strong 2025-26 United Rugby Championship campaign with a promising start to the current season.

Kelly admitted the news has been difficult for the scrum-half to process, but said the priority now is ensuring he makes a full recovery.

“We’re gutted for Kieran obviously. He’s been playing some excellent rugby for us, last season and then continuing into this one,” he said. “He was pretty down after the game on Saturday and since then he’s been waiting for the scan results. He’s got clarity at least about the surgery, but obviously he’s disappointed. Hopefully he’ll have a good rehab process and we get him back on the pitch and back to the level of form he’s been showing for us.”
